The size standards

• US Passport / Visa — 2 × 2 in (51 × 51 mm), exported at 600 × 600 px. Head 25–35 mm chin-to-crown, eyes 28–35 mm from the bottom edge, plain white background.
• EU / Schengen — 35 × 45 mm, head 70–80% of the photo height, light grey or white background.
• UK — 35 × 45 mm, head 29–34 mm chin-to-crown, plain light-grey or cream background.
• China 1-inch and 2-inch — 25 × 35 mm and 35 × 49 mm with white, blue or red backgrounds — the everyday sizes for résumés, exams and applications.
• China Visa — 33 × 48 mm on plain white, matching the online COVA upload spec.
• Canada — 50 × 70 mm with a smaller head in frame (31–36 mm chin-to-crown).
• Australia — 35 × 45 mm, head 32–36 mm chin-to-crown, plain light background.

Which size should I pick?

Go by the document you are applying for — that is the safe rule. US passport and US visa applications take the 2 × 2 in square; any Schengen-country visa takes 35 × 45 mm; UK applications use the same 35 × 45 mm print with their own head-height range. For China, résumés, exam registrations and most everyday forms ask for the 1-inch (25 × 35 mm) or 2-inch (35 × 49 mm) photo, while the visa application itself needs 33 × 48 mm on plain white. Canada is the outlier at 50 × 70 mm with a noticeably smaller head in frame, and Australia follows the 35 × 45 mm European format. If a form only says "2 inch" or "35 × 45", match the millimetres — naming conventions differ between printers and agencies, and the millimetre figure is what gets measured.

Why the guide lines matter

Most passport photos are rejected for one thing: head size and position. Every authority publishes head-height ranges (and often an eye-line range), and an otherwise perfect photo fails if the head is cropped too tight or floats too low.
